The inside stories from the restaurant world.
And Anada thing
There's plenty on the immediate Melbourne horizon to get excited about, but possibly nothing as small as Anada, set to open in the increasingly attractive Gertrude Street - Three, One, Two moves to Fitzroy's other street late this year, too.
Fashioned from the remains of the cute little Ume Japanese restaurant, Anada may well be a small slice of MoVida out of the city. Owners Jesse (the chef) and Vanessa (front of house) Gerner both worked under Frank Camorra before setting up this new venture, which they hope will reflect a passion for Andalucia fostered while travelling Spain and working in London.
Vanessa Gerner worked at the famed River Cafe and her husband cooked for Sam and Sam Clark - guests of the Melbourne Food and Wine Festival last year - at Moro, their renowned Spanish-Moorish restaurant. Jesse Gerner fondly remembers trips to Spain sponsored by the restaurant to bring back legs of jamon.
The pair has just finished a refit of the narrow restaurant, including the kitchen where a charcoal grill has been installed. Seating will include conventional tables, high tables with stools and a communal table at the rear. They open tomorrow week.
